25 years ago – 1996
“Bond question will be back; June vote likely” Citing strong urgency from the community to try again, the Clarkston Board of Education reached a consensus to bring December’s failed bond proposal back to voters in June.
“Flu pounds Clarkston” The early flu epidemic sweeping the country did not miss Clarkston. All Clarkston school buildings reported heavier than normal absences during the week – some as high as the normal rate.
“Hockey team wins Country Day tournament” Only four weeks old, the Clarkston Hockey team had a piece of hardware to be displayed in the trophy case after winning the Country Day International Tournament. They defeated Country Day, 9-2; and Marysville, 4-3.
50 years ago – 1971
“Teacher contract ratified” An economic package costing Clarkston School District $2.8 million was ratified by the Board of Education.
“Athletic rules changes” The state was proposing schools send out a master eligibility list giving a rundown on all team members prior to the season and a current eligibility list one week prior to each game. Milford Mason, Clarkston assistant superintendent of schools, said eligibility until then was operated by faith.
“Bailey Lake wins drive” Bailey Lake Elementary School was awarded a plaque for collecting the most Betty Crocker coupons for Clarkston Jaycettes to purchase kidney machines. The school collected 23,382 coupons.
75 years ago – 1946
“Two hostesses honor sister with shower” Mrs. Archie Draper, formerly Elsie Beadle, was complimented Saturday afternoon with a pink and blue shower given by her sisters, Mrs. Walter Emeigh and Mrs. Norman Jenkins.
“Bank employees have annual party” Mr. and Mrs. George D. King’s annual Christmas party for the Clarkston State Bank employees and their guests took place Saturday evening, Dec. 14, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Robinson. The evening was spent dancing and playing cards with a buffet dinner served at midnight.
“Clarkston locals” Honor Stickney arrived home on Tuesday from Michigan State College for the Christmas vacation. William Radoye and Eldon Rouse also came home from Michigan State College to spend their 15 days vacation.
