25 years ago – 1996
“To the slopes!” Pine Knob Ski Resort was packed Friday as freshly fallen snow and a vacation from school brought out families. There was at times a wait to get on the tow ropes, and ski lessons were being conducted around the lodge.
“Get used to it: 248 is the new area code” Just when residents had gotten used to who has the 810 area code and who was still in 313, along came another change. Effective May 10, most of Oakland County would have a new area code, 248.
“Tie-dye: not just for hippies any more” The Discovery Team at Clarkston Middle School spent part of the last day before the holiday break working on its identity. The 110 seven graders in the team learned how to tie dye and created their own multi-colored T-shirt which would become the team identity on special days of the year.
50 years ago – 1971
“Johnson looks back” Ken Johnson, Independence Township treasurer, looked back at his time at the position as he decided not to see reelection for the next term. He assumed the post in 1959.
“Around the township” Mrs. Wallace Smith, of Davisburg Road, reported a Christmas light bulb was still in use after 25 years. The Smiths purchased it their first Christmas they were married.
“Adventures at Andersonville” One of the most exciting projects going on at Andersonville was the Camera Club, which met every Friday. Smaller groups brought in their cameras for practice shots.
75 years ago – 1946
“’John Deere Day’ to be sponsored by Mereness-Overholt” “John Deere Day” was planned to be observed on January 16 at Davisburg Town Hall, featuring free movies and a free lunch. The event was sponsored by Mereness & Overholt.
“Bowling team has steak dinner” King’s Insurance honored the bowling team of Charles Rockwell, Ronald (Buck) Weber, Charles Robinson, Arthur Rose and Robert Jones with a steak dinner at Clarkston Cafe to open the bowling season and wish the team best wishes.
“Clarkston locals” Mr. and Mrs. George Marshall and Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Nelsey were located in St. Petersburg, Fla. for the remainder of they winter. They enjoyed Christmas in Auburndale with Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Warden and daughter, Carol.
