25 years ago – 1999
$18,000 raised for SCAMP during ‘nicest day in May’:
Sunday was the perfect day to walk around town as community members and supporters took to the streets to get out and walk for SCAMP. Geri Batt, executive director of the funding corporation, said the proceeds closely matched 1998 with around $18,000. Batt added over 250 people showed up to support the SCAMP program which included families, dogs and groups from local schools.
Freshman sports may get boost from Clarkston Schools: In an effort to accommodate a large group of students interested in participating in sports, Clarkston was considering expanding its roster of athletes at the secondary level. The Clarkston Board of Education held a special meeting at the high school with Athletics Director Dan Fife to determine the demand for new sports and look at costs for existing sports. “We are looking to add three new sports, hockey, boys and girls swimming and girls golf,” said Fife. “We are also looking to add freshman boys and girls soccer and lightweight football.”
29-year-old school record falls: A highlight for Clarkston Track and Field at the Ashley Relays at Waterford Mott High School came when Mark Carlson, Brett Quantz, Kevin Breen and Klint Powell all teamed up to break the school record in the mile relay, finishing in the time of 3:26.2. The previous record had stood since 1970. “They have been talking about breaking that record,” said Coach Walt Wyniemko. “If they were going to do it, they needed to do it in a meet like this with a lot of big teams there.”
50 years ago – 1974
Township destined for clean up:
Independence and Springfield townships were cleaning up in May. Township landfills offered dumping privileges at no cost to residents on designated days. About 15 groups, primarily Boy and Girl Scouts, were assigned roadside areas in Independence Township. Mrs. Carolyn Place reported the Oakland County Road Commission agreed to drive the roads on Monday following the clean up to dispose of large items.
CHS girls win two: The Clarkston High School Varsity Softball team opened their season with two league victories. The defending Wayne-Oakland League champs handed Milford a 21-10 loss and defeated West Bloomfield by a score of 15-7.
The mill stream: Cheryl Phelps, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Phelps of Kingfisher, gave a surprise 16th birthday party for Kim Hamaker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Hamaker of Kingfisher. There were 20 girls present to make it a happy occasion. Everyone had a real good time at the slumber party, even if they didn’t get to sleep until five.

75 years ago – 1949
Clarkston downs Fraser 2-1: Fraser was handed its first defeat when Clarkston’s Keating let them down without a hit. It was the first no-hitter around so far for the year. Keating struck out nine batters in the 2-1 win and walked three.
Clarkston Station school news: The first grade pupils drew different animals and clowns they had seen in a circus and making a circus book. The sixth grade started to work in their new science books on Friday.
Clarkston locals: Mr. and Mrs. Ira Jones arrived in Clarkston after enjoying the winter at their home in St. Cloud, Fla. They feasted on the beautiful scenery all the way. The dogwood and other flowering trees were in full bloom and the fresh green on the mountainsides made quite a picture.
