25 years ago – 1996
“Bids approved for new high school” With one bang of the gavel, the Clarkston Board of Education approved nearly $24 million worth of bids for the new high school.
“Tell Me a Story” For years the Clarkston Community Historical Society has had on audiotape reminiscences of some elderly local residents about their early days in Clarkston. Now, the tapes would become part of a new books the CCHS was planning to publish.
“Hockey team shows it’s ready” The Jungle could be growing in a more arctic environment – that’s because the first Clarkston Varsity Hockey team was making its long-awaited regular season debut with a game against Bloomfield Hills. Fans got a glimpse of possible good times as the Wolves won two scrimmage games by a combined score of 22-6.
50 years ago – 1971
“Altman accepts county post” Howard Altman, Independence Township Clerk, was named the Director of Elections for Oakland County. Altman began his new position on November 29 and was taking over for Mrs. Mabel Child who was retiring at the end of the year.
“Golfer compete in Florida” Gordon Booker, 15, of Holcomb Road, and William Bildstein, 17, of Wealthy, entered the Orange Bowl International Junior Golf Tournament at Biltmore Course in Florida, which would be held Dec. 27-30.
“Around the township” Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Inamells were pleasantly surprised at the home of relatives, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Kaines of Williams Lake for a party held in honor of their 25th wedding anniversary.
75 years ago – 1946
“One of Clarkston’s oldest residents celebrates birthday” William Buzzard turned 91-years-old on Sunday, Nov. 17. Although he didn’t have his birthday party he did enjoy a lovely day. Mr. Buzzard was in good health and kept busy every day doing his chores on the farm while keeping up with the news in the newspapers and on the radio.
“New library books to be on display” Some new books purchased for the elementary school library were on display in the lobby of the Clarkston State Bank on Dec. 5, 6 and 7.
“Clarkston locals” A line from the Ira Joneses said they arrived at their home in St. Cloud, Florida on Nov. 8 and the temperature was 90 degrees.
