15 years ago – 2004
“Fire destroys Springfield Township home” County investigators were looking into the cause of a fire which destroyed a home under construction in Springfield Township. Fire Chief Charlie Oaks noted the home didn’t have electricity or gas connected.
“Parent research history of middle school rivalry” It was the last fall of the Clarkston Middle School and Sashabaw Middle School rivalry and parents wanted to make sure the 35-year tradition and history wasn’t forgotten.
“Golf revival, Wolves make states” A third place finish in the regional tournament gave the Clarkston Boys Varsity Golf team their first visit to the state tournament in ten years.

25 years ago – 1994
“Is the Sashabaw corridor the next downtown?” During a special planning meeting, the possibility of a Sashabaw Road “downtown” district had Independence Township officials concerned about the future. “My concern is how is how this is to be developed,” said John Lutz, treasurer.
“Little auditioner almost makes it big” Three-year-old Justin Monson was a bundle of energy which is why his parents, Vernette and John, thought their son would be perfect to audition for a role in “Miss Saigon” which was looking for children to fill spots in their production.
“State champs” The Clarkston Boys Varsity Golf team had a great first round during the Class A state championship. They finished the tournament beating Traverse City 606-614 for the championship.

 

50 years ago – 1969
“Strike ends” The negotiating teams for Clarkston Education Association and Clarkston Board of Education reached a tentative agreement in a meeting. The plan was for schools to open within a few days, pending approval from both sides.
“Deer Lake littering brings complaints to township” Complaints of littering Deer Lake were heard at the township meeting. Two representatives of the Deer Lake Improvement Association asked the Independence Township board if anything could be done to prohibit traffic from getting to the beach area on the east side of the north end of the lake.
“Around the town” A weekend at Niagara Falls helped Mr. and Mrs. Jake Drake celebrate their 25th wedding anniversay.
