25 years ago – 1999
The Clarkston of the future: Downtown Clarkston didn’t need to be changed, it only needed to be refined – that was national city planner Doyle Hyatt’s take on what community members wanted for the City of Clarkston by the year 2007. Hyatt and his wife and partner, Dolores Palma, listened to concerns and wishes of about 70 area residents, business and civic leaders and government officials at a Community Visioning Meeting.
A Lion’s prize: Nine-year-old Joe Harrington got an up-close-and-personal look at the Detroit Lions. Herrington, of Clarkston, was honored by a special celebration to recognize 1999’s McDonald’s/Detroit Lions Honorary Captains. As part of the award, Harrington received four game tickets and a parking pass to the Oct. 16 home game against the Minnesota Vikings. He was able to watch the pre-game warm-ups from the sidelines, escort the official team captains to the coin toss and have his photo taken on the field.
Girls down Chargers, more OAA I tests await: The Clarkston Girls Varsity Basketball team had just one win to show for the first half of its league schedule. With efforts like the one the team had against Southfield Lathrup, the number could increase dramatically in the second half of the schedule after the 50-24 win.
50 years ago – 1974
Devils begone!: With very little hocus-pocus, the Independence Township Board voted unanimously to abolish Devil’s Night, the evening traditionally preceding Halloween when tricks but no treats perpetrated on local merchants and residents. The Clarkston Village Council also adopted a motion to abolish Devil’s Night. In abolishing it, officials were attempting to reverse a trend toward permitting a holiday free of vandalism.
Wolves shut-out Kettering 48-0: History was made Friday night when Clarkston Varsity Football defeated Waterford Kettering for the first time since the two schools had been playing each other. The Wolves helped to make up for any past defeats as they left the field with a 48-0 shut out, scoring an average of a point per minute of playing time.
The mill stream: Uldene Jones was surprised by two parties to celebrate her 60th birthday. The first party took place at the residence took place at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Town on North Main Street. The Nickelodeon on M-15 was the scene of a surprise dinner party for Mrs. Jones, hosted by her husband, Robert.
75 years ago – 1949
Building started on new factory: The Hawk Tool and Engineering Co., took possession of the former Ford factory on West Washington, and construction was well underway on the building to be used for manufacturing. Some trees were planted along Washington to beautify the grounds.
Clarkston locals: Mr. and Mrs. Rex Fenstemaker and Mr. and Mrs Basil Taylor spent the previous week in the upper peninsula bird hunting. Mr. and Mrs. Garnet Poulton spent the weekend in Lansing with their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Capillo. They attended the football game.
The Hilltopper: The Home Economics Department, under the direction of Miss Etzler and with the co-operation of the Home Economics II girls, was undergoing a renovation. Daintiness had been forgotten and blue jeans furnished the ensemble while the girls merrily and craftily splashed paint on the bookshelves and cupboards in a color scheme of sunbury yellow and green.
