25 years ago – 1999
Excellence rewarded: One lucky Clarkston High School teacher was Tuesday’s winner of $25,000 at a special assembly. State Superintendent of Public Instruction Arthur Ellis surprised chemistry instructor Keith Cook and family when he announced Cook’s name to the group. The award was presented to three other teachers in the state as part of a yearly effort by the Milken Family Foundation’s National Education Awards program.
School enrollment up four percent: Numbers were up from the previous year following Clarkston Community Schools’ fourth Friday count of students enrolled. The state aid is determined each year based on the schools’ unofficial count. For the year, the unaudited total was 7,283, a four percent increase from the previous year’s total of 7,023.
Swimmers racing up the charts: In its first season, the Clarkston Girls Swim team had realistic expectations – improve as much as possible and try to be competitive when the league meet takes place in November. However, those goals could adjust following the Wolves’ recent three-meet winning streak. They improved 3-3 with a 101-85 win over Madison Heights Lamphere.

50 years ago – 1974
Weber resigns after 25 years on board: Ronald (Buck) Weber, a member of Clarkston’s Board of Education for a quarter of a century, submitted his resignation, effective October 14. Weber said he was resigning from the board due to his retirement from his job as administrator of payrolls and employee benefit plans at GMC Truck and Coach Division in May. He shared he and his wife planned to travel and spend the winter in a warmer climate.
Clarkston Madrigals sing: Music teacher Grayce Warren led the Clarkston Madrigal Singers, a group of 17 Clarkston High School junior and seniors through a fast paced musical number. The group planned to perform at a number of different functions during the coming school year.
Clarkston beats Milford: Clarkston Varsity Football proved to be the superior team against on Friday as they overpowered Milford High School, 35-7. The game, half of which was played in heavy rain, was the Wolves’ first victory over an opponent in the Wayne-Oakland League.

75 years ago – 1949
Committee works for school band: The School Band Instrument Committee, including Orlo J. Willoughby, William Mansfield and Mrs. Herbert Lissner, met at the Herbert Lissner home on Monday evening. They discussed how and where to secure enough instruments.
Letter received from Cairo, Egypt: Mrs. David Newlands received an interesting letter from the Reverend Dwight S. Large, who went to Egypt this past summer. The letter included his trip to get to Cairo and what his job included while he was there. Large spent a year in Clarkston as pastor of the Methodist Church.
Party honors ninth birthday: Mrs. Harold Weston entertained a number of young folks at her home on Wompole Drive for five hours, honoring her daughter, Gail, who was celebrating her ninth birthday. Gail and her friends had a grand time playing games. She received many pretty gifts and the best wishes of the group.
