25 years ago – 1999
Farmer Jack buys Clarkston Food Town: The end of an era came when longtime grocery staple, Food Town, was sold to Farmer Jack. Amy Sanderson, director of advertising for Farmer Jack Super Markets in Detroit, said the sale was effective Oct. 4. Farmer Jack planned to move in and begin operating the 40,000-square foot store, 6555 Sashabaw Road in Independence Township, Nov. 1. There were plans to remodel but not to expand.
Band weaves anti-drug message through music: As they say, some people just have the gift and that was apparent with Giftvs, a talented trio of young Clarkston musicians who had just released their first album, “Giftvs. Sturgeon General Warning.” The band hoped to be a gift to young people and others, preaching a message that drugs weren’t needed to be cool. They hoped “youth can relate,” said Kevin Calcaterra, bassist.
County champs: The Clarkston Boys Cross Country team captured its first Oakland County title in school history with a first-place finish at the Oakland County Meet. The Wolves’ 80 points, five more points than runner-up and defending state champion, Novi. The team placed five runners in the top 25 with Dave Sage in third place; Matt Haver, eighth; Brett Quantz, 20th; Kevin Breen, 24th; and Dan Burke, 25th.

50 years ago – 1974
M-15 may have four lanes: M-15 could be in for some changes by the State Highway Department which were not foreseen in their original plan for 1975. Highway Department spokesman Edward Boucher said the traffic and safety division was looking into the possibility of widening to four lanes, 900 feet of highway north of US-10.
Girls notch two more wins: The Clarkston Girls Varsity Basketball team added two victories to its season record which, at the time, stood at 5-0. The team traveled to Walled Lake Western where they breezed to a 52-31 win with Cindy Hunt leading with 15 points. They opened their Wayne-Oakland League competition at home against Livonia-Clarenceville, 54-29. Hunt led with 13 points.
The mill stream: Clarkston Junior High School teacher Barb Tyrrell was honorary guest at a baby shower given by friends Sally Granlund, MaryLynn Colwell and Sandra Leach. The shower was held at Colwell’s house on Princess in Clarkston with many of Barb’s friends from the junior high attending.

75 years ago – 1949
Clarkston school needs classroom: The Clarkston Board of Education held a special meeting, Oct. 3, to consider arrangements for a temporary classroom for first and second grade students. An additional classroom was required because the enrollment was over 100 first and second grade students from the former Clarkston school district.
Rangers and polo teams give show: The Michigan Rangers held their fourth annual horse show at the Tip Top Farm on Dixie Highway. An audience of up to 1,600 people witnessed a fast and hard fought polo game by the Detroit Gold Hats against the Clarkston Farms Team.
The Hilltopper: In Kindergarten, there were 51 students with 27 in the morning and 24 in the afternoon. The classes had been coloring leaves and cutting them out to put on their bulletin board. They had fun saying rhymes and also singing some nursery rhymes.
