25 years ago – 1995
“’I hope I pick the right one’” Ryan Schapman hugged Laura Witkowski after surprising her with a red rose, the symbol of a finalist for Homecoming queen during the pre-tapping ceremony. Witkowski is a twin and Schapman was concerned he’d “tap” the wrong girl.
“Clarkston woman vies for Ms. Senior Michigan” Renate Laprett hadn’t touched her accordion for years. She dug it out of the closet when she decided to enter the Ms. Senior America contest. Laprett was one of 12 finalists from Michigan to compete for the title.
“Troy falls to CHS in OAA golf match” They were young and unexperienced, but the Clarkston Boys Varsity Golf team was 3-0 after their latest dual meet against Troy. The Wolves came out ahead 159-164 in the meet and earned its first win in the Oakland Activities Athletic Association I.
50 years ago – 1970
“Township asks police millage” Independence Township voters would find on the Nov. 3 ballot a request to vote for one mill for ten years for police service.
“Wolves take opener” Clarkston Varsity Football displayed their talents in a 27-20 win over Oxford. The Wolves opened scoring with a 70-yard pass play from quarterback John Hux to Kurt Richardson. Richardson also had an interception and 74-yard run. Two points from Rick Prasil put the Wolves 14-0 at halftime.
“Around town” Kary Lane was the name the Donald Hamakers of Kingfisher gave their new son. Kary weighed 10 pounds, five ounces at birth on Sept. 16. He was welcomed home by his 12-year-old sister, Kim, and 9-year-old brother, Kevin.
75 years ago – 1945
“World War II Veterans joining legion” Mrs. Shirley Douglas Mosher and Clark E. Soulby joined the American Legion Post during the regular meeting. Mrs. Mosher was the first lady member of the local post.
“Girl Scout news” The Girls Scouts of Clarkston held its first meeting for the fall under the leadership of Miss Campbell. The troop had 15 girls and were divided into two patrols.
“The Hilltopper” Miss Kloock’s junior and senior homemaking class at Clarkston High School received first hand instruction in fire fighting.
