BREAKING NEWS: Burn Conditions

**URGENT MESSAGE FROM THE INDEPENDENCE TOWNSHIP FIRE CHIEF**
EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY and UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE
For All Residents of Independence Township and The City of Clarkston

As a result of the extremely dry conditions, the Independence Township Fire Department is urging all residents of Independence Township and The City of the Village of Clarkston to refrain from any form of open burning and the use of consumer fireworks. In any event, the Fire Department recommends that you exercise extreme caution when conducting any form of open burning and/or using consumer fireworks. The prolonged lack of rain has caused conditions in which ground materials (grass, brush, trees, landscape mulch, etc.) are exceptionally dry creating a much higher risk for uncontrolled fires. Fires that ignite will spread quickly and endanger both lives and property.

The State of Michigan, Department of Natural Resources, has issued a “VERY HIGH” fire danger risk rating for the Southeast Michigan area including Independence Township and the City of Clarkston. We urge all residents to take extra precautions over the next couple of days and throughout the holiday week as the dry conditions persist. Again, because of these conditions, fires will ignite and spread very easily. In the event of a fire, call 911 immediately.
