Head Coach John Weyer held up the regional championship trophy to the Clarkston Girls Varsity Basketball team on Friday.
The girls had just defeated Rochester Adams for the crown, 75-48, but there was a bigger meaning to it in the shortened winter season during the COVID pandemic.
“Every game has been a blessing,” Weyer said. “Every practice has been a gift we have still been able to be out here and going. I was waiting today for the call you are shut down. You are missing players. This year, you just have to enjoy every moment. You don’t know when the last game is going to be, the last practice is going to be.”
The Highlanders opened the game with a six point run and kept a lead for the first five minutes of the game.
The Wolves went on a 10-point run with less than three minutes to go in the first quarter which junior Izzy Hadley and senior Kaelyn Kaul both scored on field goals. Junior Maddy Skorupski scored two points on the free throw line. Senior Olivia Toderan closed the quarter with a basket, putting the score 16-10.
The game was tied at 27 points as both teams went into the half time break.
“The locker room was interesting,” said Weyer. “I challenged them and I think they responded really well. That third quarter in basketball was how we should play basketball and I was impressed with the way they responded. They should be very proud.”
Clarkston came out to score four points to take the lead with baskets from Skorupski and Kaul.
With two minutes remaining in the third quarter, the Wolves opened their lead by 11 points with a combined effort from sophomore Keira, Kaul and Hadley. A basket from Skorupski at the buzzer, put the score 51-37.
Hadley and Kaul opened the fourth quarter with a pair of field goals.
Skorupski led with 22 points and had ten rebounds, eight steals, six assists and five blocks.
Kaul finished the night with 19 points. Hadley had 16 points and eight rebounds.
Clarkston defeated Waterford Kettering in the district semifinals on March 24, 62-51.
Kaul led with 13 points and had five rebounds. Senior Olivia Toderan had 12 points and eight rebounds. Freshman Emily Valencia had 11 points and five rebounds.
The Wolves lost to Bloomfield Hills Marian on Monday in the regional semifinal, 60-53.
