Clarkston finds winning ways at invitational

The Clarkston girls volleyball squad found its winning ways on Michigan’s west side on Dec. 16.
The Wolves went 3-2 in the Portage Northern Invitational in Portage, Mich. After starting the season with two consecutive losses to league rivals Farmington and Birmingham Seaholm.
After losing the first game to East Kentwood, the Wolves rallied for three straight victories over Comstock Park, Carman Ainsworth and Paw Paw. The girls dropped the final match of the day to host Portage Northern, 25-11, 25-16 and the third game 15-10.
‘I was really happy with the way they played,? Coach Kelly Avenall said.
‘It’s a great tournament to go to.?
The five-game loss to Farmington two days earlier helped establish the team’s ability in the players? thoughts, Avenall said.
‘They realized they could hang with people. Even though we started 0-2, now they have realized they have realized they are good team and can definitely beat people,? she said.
Throughout the tournament, outside hitter Lauren Gardner had 24 kills, setter Emily Parkin had 67 assists, middle hitter Juliann Gillespie had 21 kills and Amanda Byrd had 51 digs playing the libero position for Clarkston.
