MILFORD — The Wolves scored two more points than Walled Lake Central to claim the championship at the MHSAA Division 1 Lower Peninsula Track and Field Region 9 meet at Memorial Field, May 17.
The Clarkston Boys Track and Field team scored 93 points for first place out of 14 teams. Walled Lake Central finished in second place with 91 points; Milford, third, 56.5; Detroit Catholic Central, fourth, 55; and Lake Orion, fifth, 54, to round off the top five.
The Wolves had six individuals and four relay teams qualify for the state meet, set for this Saturday.
Individual qualifiers were: junior Micah Chaney in the 100-meter dash in first place, 11.12; freshman Wendell Childs, 400-meter dash, first, 49.13;
senior Bryce Nowik, 800-meter run, second, 1:56.70; senior Andrew Floros, 3,200-meter run, 9.27.81; sophomore Ryan Barnes, 3,200-meter run, 9:30.91; and sophomore Cameron Love, long jump, fourth, 21-02.75.
The Wolves had two relay team finish in first place while qualifying for the state meet as the team of Childs, Chaney, Nowik and junior Gabe Van Goor finished in the time of 3:22.72 in the 1,600-meter relay. The team of Nowik, Floros, Childs and junior Joshua Ellingsworth in the time of 7:49.02 in the 3,200-meter relay.
The team of Van Goor, Chaney, sophomore Mason Sidaway and junior Rence Leon-Fountain finished in second place in the 800-meter relay, 1:29.28.
The team of Leon-Fountain, Sidaway, Chaney and junior Pierce Peruski finished in fifth place in the 400-meter relay, 43.15.
The top eight finishers in events scored points which included the qualifiers as well as Van Goor in third place in the 400-meter dash in the time of 50.98; junior Jaxson Nowik, fifth, 1,600-meter run, 4:27.51; and Leon-Fountain, fifth, long jump, 20-05.
The girls team took third place out of 13 teams with 86.75 points scored during the meet.
The Wolves had three individuals qualify in five events. They also had three relay teams qualify for the state meet.
The individual qualifiers were: freshman Allison Thurman in the 100-meter dash adaptive in first place in the time of 48.09; and in the 200-meter dash adaptive, first, 1:33.07. Senior Alexandra Brighham in second place in the 3,200-meter run in the time of 11:07.14; and third, 1,600-meter run, 5:06.24. Sophomore Caitlin Poterek in second place in the 100-meter hurdles, 15.82.
The team of senior Cassandra King, junior Scarlett Keenan, sophomore Emma Garner and sophomore Skylar Drinkard finished in third place in the 400-meter relay event in the time of 49.98. The team of Keenan, Poterek, Drinkard and junior Keira Zorski finished in third place in the 800-meter relay, 1:45.55. The team of Poterek, Zorski, Drinkard and senior Emily Valencia finished in fourth place in the 1,600-meter relay, 4:04.33.
Finishing in the top eight to score points for the girls team were: in the 100-meter dash, Garner in eighth place in the time of 13.36; 200-meter dash, Drinkard, fourth, 26.32; 800-meter run, freshman Avery DeGrendel, eighth, 2:23.51; 3,200-meter run, freshman Addison Brigham, seventh, 12:10.96; 100-meter hurdles, senior Sammie Carpentier, seventh, 17.26; 300-meter hurdles, Zorski, sixth, 47.76; Poterek, seventh, 47.91; shot put, freshman Aydia Bartz, fifth, 32-00; discus, senior Abby Hasenfratz, fifth, 109-05; high jump, junior Carsey Collins, fourth, 5-0; pole vault, senior Genna Golab and junior Lily Prainito, tied for third, 9-09; junior Audrey Morgan, seventh, 8-03; long jump, sophomore Ashton Webb, fifth, 15-10; and junior Lauren Williams, seventh, 15-02.75.
Lake Orion finished in first place with a total of 96.75 points; Walled Lake Northern, second, 90.5; Farmington Hills Mercy, fourth, 80; and West Bloomfield, fifth, 69.
Clarkston finished the regular season last Friday in the Oakland County Meet at Oxford.
The MHSAA Division 1 Lower Peninsula Track and Field State Championship is this Saturday at East Kentwood. — W.R.P
