Dr. opens new family practice in Oxford

Dr. Alexander Malayev has no problem remembering his first surgery.
When he was a little boy growing up in Russia, he found a branch on a tomato plant that had been broken. He gently took the branch, poured iodine on it and attached a stick for a splint with some bandages.
‘It was my first reconstructive surgery,? he jokes today.
From then on, Malayev knew he was destined to be a doctor.
Many years and many tomato plants later, the doctor decided to begin a family medicine practice in Oxford at the Complete Family Care Center (119 S. Washington, Suite 1), located behind Head to Toes’Total Bodyworks just north of Lincoln St., in July.
Family medicine is composed of pediatrics, geriatrics, internal medicine and ambulatory obstetrics.
The Grand Blanc resident earned his medical degree from Andizhan State Medical Institute in Russia in 1981 and did specialty training in obstetrics and gynecology until 1993.
In those 12 years of being in OB/GYN, Malayev said he delivered at least 20,000 children.
‘I’m bringing unmatched expertise,? he said.
From 1994 to 2000, Malayev worked as a surgical assistant at Hurley Medical Center in Flint before passing all of his certification exams. He then completed one year of general surgical training at St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey and gained further family medicine experience at McLaren Regional Medical Center in Flint.
Malayev said his practice goals are to help prevent illness through physical examinations and periodic health screenings and to promote and maintain wellness through patient education.
As a family medicine specialist, Malayev will work closely to meet the heath care needs for you and your family.
The office runs a full spectrum of cardiac and vascular diagnostic studies, like holter monitoring, cardiac echo, arterial and venous doppler studies.
He runs his Oxford practice on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday and runs his Flint family medicine practice on Monday and Thursday, where he is 1,200 patients strong.
After being in the U.S. for 13 years, Malayev said he enjoys his role with his patients here better than in Russia.
‘Here, when a patient comes with a problem I give a choice,? he said. ‘In Russia, I basically told patients to do this or do that.?
The doctor said he hopes to eventually move from his small, two-room medical office to a larger one in the Broadway Plaza currently being constructed.
Malayev is now accepting new patients and same day appointments are available. Call the office at (248) 628-8200 to make an appointment.
