March 29 is a day that will go down in Clarkston High School history. The night saw the first varsity girls lacrosse game take place at the football stadium and the Wolves tried their hardest to make the inaugural match a victorious won, but came up short, in a 13-11 loss to Flint Carman Ainsworth.
After an early 4-1 deficit, the Cavaliers fought back to pull within one goal, 8-7 at halftime behind six goals from Alissa Shaver.
Brooke Reardon scored the first goal of the game at 24:22 of the first half, which was matched less than 20 seconds later by Shaver. Clarkston got three more unanswered goals before the Cavaliers came to life and closed the half with momentum swinging their way.
‘The second half was back and forth,? Clarkston coach Steve Reardon said.
In the loss, Reardon saw the girls play their most cohesive lacrosse of the young season.
‘That was the first time they all played like a team. Our girls played as one unit,? he said.
‘When you score 11 goals, that’s a lot. It showed we’re coming together.?
The Wolves? passing on offense was a big factor in their play, which Reardon said was a complete turnaround from their game March 27 against Grosse Pointe North.
The Wolves suffered a 16-2 loss at the hands of the Norsemen in a game, which narrowly slipped under severe storm conditions that cancelled a Clarkston soccer game at Lake Orion. The storms weren’t the only factor working against the Wolves; several team members are involved with a spring play at the school.
‘With the girls we had, we did a good job. They hung in there and gutted it out,? Reardon said.
‘We’ve got a good group of girls with good attitudes that will persevere.
‘They (Grosse Pointe North) had a little more endurance because of experience.?
The Norsemen’s efficiency at winning face-offs and then distributing the ball to the offense, caught the Wolves out of position defensively, Reardon said.
‘Those are things we’re just learning’you have to adjust to how your opponent is playing.?
The girls pick up play March 18 at Grand Blanc with a 7:45 p.m. start.
