Teachers at Goddard School in Lake Orion received the nasal H1N1 vaccine free of charge Friday, Oct. 30.
Goddard is a private childcare franchise. Lake Orion’s campus is owned by Kellie McDonald.
According to Oakland County executives, vaccines are limited. Only 12,000 in the county were inoculated in clinics in Farmington Hills and Clarkston, Saturday, Oct. 24.
Despite the vaccine’s scarcity, 20 vaccines were administered at Goddard School to owners and staff.
‘I feel so lucky we’re able to get this for our teachers,? said McDonald.
The owner said she asked her doctor to save nasal vaccines for Goddard staff. McDonald’s doctor even waived administrative fees for inoculation.
‘His office was proactive enough to apply to become a provider,? said McDonald. ?[The vaccines] come directly from the health department.?
McDonald added she’s looking for her doctor to offer an on-site clinic for enrolled families.
‘It’s not just to protect [teachers],? she said. ‘It’s to protect from spreading.?
She noted that teachers are in the vaccine target group, and to keep students safe, they should get the vaccine.
The next vaccine clinic open to the public will be Thursday, Nov. 5 at the Palace of Auburn Hills, from 2 to 8 p.m. The county released information on the clinic Tuesday morning.
According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), pregnant women, people ages six months to 24 years old, caregivers of children six months and younger, adults with underlying medical conditions and healthcare workers should get the vaccine.
