Goodrich grapplers prepare for postseason competition

Goodrich’s wrestling team gained some quality experience to take into the team districts Feb. 16 at Goodrich.
The Martians hosted the Goodrich Team Wrestling Tournament Saturday, Feb. 5, finishing sixth place overall out of ten teams after Cedar Springs defeated the Martians 54-28 in the fifth-place contest. Goodrich went 3-3 in the competition.
Richmond took first place overall after defeating Lowell 37-32 in the championship match, while Fowlerville took third after beating Swartz Creek 56-13 in the third-place match.
The Martians now sport a 15-13 record heading into the team districts.
Freshman Mark Weber, senior Garrett Higdon, and senior Jason Fischer anchored the Martians? efforts at the tourney, all going 5-0 during the day’s competition.
Goodrich opened up the day’s competition with a 48-30 win against East Detroit. Kyle Fletcher (189), Ethan Tessier (215), Weber (103), Higdon (119), and Billy Feldmann (145) all earned pinfall wins for the Martians.
The Martians also earned a 50-28 win against Birmingham Brother Rice. Joe Leppek (160) earned a 5-3 decision, while seniors Erik Fernelius (171) and Fletcher (189) took pinfall wins to get the Martians started on the right foot.
Weber (103), Jason Fischer (125), and Feldmann (145) also earned pinfall wins for the Martians.
The Martians took a 50-28 win from Cedar Springs in pool competition, prior to the playoffs. Fernelius (171), Fletcher (189), Weber (103), and Higdon (112) led the way with pinfall victories.
Goodrich suffered a 48-28 setback to Fowlerville, who opened their matchup with five straight wins. The Martians also lost a 48-28 contest against Lowell in the tourney.
In Genesee Area Conference competition, the Martians are in good shape after defeating Bendle 58-6 and LakeVille 69-12 in a Feb. 2 league meet at Bendle. The Martians improved to 7-1 in the league, good for second place heading into the GAC meet Feb. 11 at Lake Fenton.
At the Jan. 29 Chippewa Valley Team Tournament, the Martians went 2-3 as a team. Four Goodrich wrestlers ? Weber, Higdon, Fischer, and Fletcher ? went 5-0 on the day.
Sophomore Grant Overcashier went 4-1 on the day, while Fernelius went 3-2 and Brian Grzecki 3-0.
Several Goodrich wrestlers are heading into the GAC meet on positive notes. Season record of key Martians, as of press time, are as follows:
