Goodrich’s wrestling team struggled mightily against Montrose Jan. 19, but rebounded to defeat New Lothrop in Genesee Area Conference Red Division action later that night.
The Martians lost a 66-10 matchup against the host Rams. Goodrich’s only wins came at 171 lbs., where Erik Fernelius earned a 21-7 decision against Erik Freeman, and at 125 lbs., where Jason Fischer pinned John Renner in 5:54.
Goodrich’s other contest of the evening was much more hard-fought, with the Martians earning a 42-36 win against the Hornets.
The two teams started out evenly split, with New Lothrop earning two wins before Fernelius (189) pinned Ehan Bishop in 3:00 and Kyle Fletcher (215) pinned Donnie Daves in 1:23.
After the two teams split voids, the Martians won their next four matches to pull ahead 36-18.
Mark Weber (112) won a 6-5 decision against Steve Jando; Garrett Higdon (119) pinned Kyle Trent in 3:33; Fischer (125) defeated Jordan Brown by a 16-11 decision; and Grant Overcashier (130) won by default.
The Hornets came back to win three of the final four matches, but Goodrich’s Billy Feldmann (145) earned a key victory when he pinned Tom Wenzick in 1:08, giving the Martians enough points to win the match.
