The Lady Wildcats had a rough week on the court facing what is hopefully only a temporary losing streak.
On Sept. 18, Oxford lost to Fenton by a wide 43-36. Leading shooter was Ally Zonsius with 11 points. She was followed closely by Denise Spratley, who went four for six on the line, and Mykala Salquist, each with 10. Kacey Cookingham also stepped up to the line going three for four and totaling five points.
The Lady Cats luck didn’t change much on Sept. 23 when they were defeated by Linden 39-23. Coach Becky Graves said the girls’ hearts just weren’t into the Tuesday game.
“We just could not score,” said Graves. “Until the fourth quarter we weren’t even in the double digits.”
Shannon Gerbe tried to pull the ladies from their slump by playing a great game and taking some shots.
“She played her heart out,” said Graves. “She played her best game of the season and really tried when others didn’t.”
Oxford saw some new faces taking shots on the court for the evening: Gerbe had a 3-pointer, Vanessa Collier had a 3-pointer, Danielle Flores had two points and Katie Bray had one. Jenni Rhodes was high scorer for the night going two for four on the line and totaling four points.
The varsity girls team is sitting 3-5 overall and 1-2 in the Flint Metro as they prepare to face the second toughest team in the league, the Brandon Martians.
“We’ve got some time yet to improve on this,” concluded Graves.
