Icers win third straight league contest 5-2 over Waterford Mott

All Clarkston can do after an 8-0 shellacking from Orchard Lake St. Mary’s in a non-league match is put the game behind them. After allowing two power-play goals to the Eaglets, the Wolves scored two of their own in a 5-2 win over their hockey cross-town rival, Waterford Mott on Feb. 7 at Lakeland Ice Arena.
The Corsairs (10-9-1) have now lost two straight following a six-game winning streak, while Clarkston is 3-2 in its past five games.
The Wolves (5-10-3) could not have done it without a strong showing from goaltender Garrett Knappe, who earned his fourth victory of the season after turning away 37 of the Corsairs? 39 shots.
The Corsairs out-shot Clarkston 39-17.
‘We got out-shot and he came up big for us,? Wolves coach Bryan Krygier said.
‘If we’re going to get out-shot, we need to be within one goal or even going into the third and that’s what happened here.?
The Wolves held a 3-2 lead going into the final frame and Knappe stopped Tim Greiser on two good scoring opportunities.
After the Corsairs pulled Waack with 1:20 remaining, Clarkston got empty net goals from Adam Frank and Jeremy Voelker.
Voelker had two goals on the night, the first coming at 5:36 of the first period to give Clarkston a 2-0 lead.
Corsairs coach Marty White emphasized that Mott needs to capitalize and make the knock out punch.
‘We definitely out-shot them, but we just didn’t finish. We didn’t execute and we didn’t pick up the rebounds,? White said.
