Goodrich-Evan Huizenga does not let soccer season end in the village. As coordinator of Goodrich’s Open Soccer, Goodrich native Huizenga provides a time and a place for community players to keep the ball rolling during summer months.
‘I wanted open soccer to build the interest of soccer in the community, and it definitely has,? said Huizenga.
Four years ago, when Huizenga and former Goodrich resident Josh Watson began the program, Huizenga remembers fewer than 30 people showing up for games.
‘Now, we get up to 60 people. We have to split into three teams,? said Huizenga.
The ages and skill levels of the players are as varied as the reasons they attend.
Heather Cardneau, 18, loves having the chance to play against boys. Andrew Krauss, 18, likes to keep in touch with old friends. Amber Beard, 19, said she just wants to run off all of her fat.
Cassie Shepherd said open soccer is a good way for her to keep her skills honed.
‘I’m going to play soccer in college this fall and open soccer is a good way to get a touch on the ball,? said Shepherd.
Games take place from 6:30-9 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays in front of Oaktree Elementary, 7500 S. Gale Road. Goodrich residents are welcome.
‘Open soccer is a good place to play organized soccer,? said Huizenga. ‘It’s really good for the community.?
