Lady Cats fall in district opener

The Lady Wildcats basketball season came to an end on Thursday, March 5 with a 46-26 loss against Waterford Mott in the opening rounds of district play.
‘We had a very poor start to the game, due in part to Mott’s strong play but also due to our own mistakes and not matching their intensity? said Oxford Head Coach Al Poynter. ‘It is almost impossible to come back from such a slow start against a good team in tournament play.?
Junior Allie Laidlaw and Senior Jessica Raisch each had eight points for the Wildcats, who ended the season at 12-6 in the Flint Metro League, and 12-9 overall.
After a three game slump in the middle of the season, the Lady Cats finished the season strong, winning four out of their last five games which earned them a bye in the Michigan High School Athletic Association district tournament.
Coach Poynter said that this loss doesn’t put a damper on the fine season they had.
‘This game doesn’t take away the fact that we had a solid season overall,? he said. ‘Our seniors have accomplished a lot over the last two seasons and have helped us build a solid foundation for the program to go forward.?
