Local gridiron schedules unveiled for this season

Brandon and Goodrich’s varsity football teams now know their schedules for the upcoming season.
The Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) Web site has the schedules for all Michigan high schools listed on their site. Brandon, which went 5-4 last season, is scheduled their year Aug. 25 hosting defending Flint Metro League champion Linden, while Goodrich, which compiled a 1-8 record, is slated to go on the road against Richmond that same day.
The Blackhawks are starting the coming season off with a tough test against the Eagles, which went undefeated in regular season play during the 2005 season.
The Eagles went 9-1 last season, losing 35-28 to Birmingham Seaholm in the first round of state playoff action Oct. 28. Last year, the Eagles shut out the Blackhawks 35-0 in Flint Metro League play.
‘We’re excited about that opportunity,? Brandon coach Ron Gill said. ‘We’ve been preparing for them, really, since the end of last year.?
For the second straight year, there will be a new member school in the Flint Metro League, as Swartz Creek joins the conference this year, following Clio’s defection from the Big Nine Conference last year. The Blackhawks are scheduled to travel to Swartz Creek Oct. 20 in their final regular season game of the year.
‘I think they’ll add a lot to the league,? Gill said of Swartz Creek. ‘It’s nice geographically, not have to travel as far for nonleague games. I think they’ll be a welcome addition.?
The Blackhawks only have one scheduled nonleague game this year, a Sept. 15 contest against Corunna. ‘This would be, to my knowledge, the first time Brandon has played Corunna,? Gill said. ‘They’re a really good program with a strong tradition.?
In fact, Corunna, which went 5-4 last year, is the one common opponent this year for both the Blackhawks and the Martians. The Martians are scheduled to travel to Corunna for an Nov. 13 game.
Goodrich also played the Cavaliers last year, with Corunna winning a 14-7 game Oct. 14, 2005.
In addition to Richmond and Corunna, the Martians have two other scheduled nonleague games this season: Sept. 1, when the Martians travel to Bay City John Glenn (8-2 last season) and Oct. 20, when the Martians close out their regular season against Yale (5-4).
Brandon is scheduled to host five varsity games this season, while Goodrich is on tap for four home contests.
Goodrich varsity football coach Tom Alward could not be reached for comment as of press time.
