Local volunteers recognized for excellence in service

Volunteer’s efforts and drive to make Clarkston a better place has clearly made a positive difference. Now, the local volunteers will experience a night of recognition in their honor.
The Clarkston Area Chamber of Commerce and Clarkston Community Schools have teamed up to bring area volunteers ‘Clarkston Community Volunteer Appreciation Night? on April 13.
As part of the ‘Each One, Reach One…Connecting for a Better Community? campaign, event coordinators wanted all area volunteers to know they are appreciated.
‘We want all of the volunteers to come out in celebration of all their hard work,? said Penny Shanks, Clarkston Area Chamber of Commerce executive director.
The celebration is for the heart of the community ? the volunteers ? and will include a special program with keynote speaker Tim Cusack, music by the Madrigal singers, refreshments and other fun surprises.
The event will allow local organizations to set up display tables with literature and have representatives available to answer questions, so guests can mingle and learn about the many area volunteer opportunities. The primary goal for why ‘Volunteer Appreciation? is so important became clear after a special Spring meeting.
‘After meeting with other leaders of nonprofit organizations, we realized nobody knew each other,? said Shanks. ‘The meeting formed a lot of energy and that is how the idea for the appreciation night came about.?
Coordinators for the night hope this will become an annual event, and are expecting about 200 guests.
‘We each do what we can to make Clarkston unique,? said Shanks. ‘This is just our way of saying thank you.?
There is no cost for the guests, just a simple rule: come to enjoy yourself in the company of good friends.
‘Volunteer Appreciation Night? will take place on April 13 at 7 p.m. in the Clarkston High School Auditorium.
