Much ‘revered? Mexican food returns to area

For the last six weeks, the sign has been wrong, but customers would agree that the food at Revere’s is all right.
Many of those customers were drawn to the new Lapeer Road eatery in Orion Township because of their fond memories for a restaurant by the same name in Oxford years back.
Owner Larry Laidler operated that eatery, in a location soon to be occupied by Italian Gardens, for 29 years before taking a break. Laidler’s certainly glad to be back in business.
‘People kind of talked me into it,? he said. ‘They wanted the food to come back.?
‘I needed a break,? he said. ‘I was away from it for seven years.?
The new incarnation will conjure up memories of the old Revere’s, but there are some subtle differences.
‘This is almost strictly a Mexican menu,? Laidler noted. ‘Before, it was a Mexican and American menu.?
Laidler added that things like chicken fingers can still be found.
‘It’s the same food, the same recipes,? he said. ‘If you liked the old Revere’s, I’m sure you’ll like this.?
Customers will find many of their favorites, like the giant nachos.
At his old location, Laidler said one couple from New York would drive through in their motor home each year and stop to eat a large order of nachos on their way up north. They’d even take a photo like the one below.
Laidler and his son, Kevin, are joint owners in the new venture, and Laidler said the idea didn’t even come about until after Jan. 1.
‘It took us 83 days to put everything together,? he said, noting they opened for business on March 24.
But even with a misspelled sign (the fa’ade renovations should be completed in the coming week) many have found their way inside.
‘We’ve had a good response,? Laidler said, noting he’s seen lots of familiar faces — many of the staff are the same as before, too.
‘We’ve probably given away a thousand menus so far,? he added.
Revere’s is located at 664 S. Lapeer Road, behind Taco Bell.
‘People interested in Mexican food might pull in to Taco Bell and see us,? Laidler said.
