Oakland Twp. historical group to host Reuther exhibit

The Oakland Township Historical Society (OTHS) is pleased to announce they will host the exhibit ‘No Greater Calling,? about Walter Reuther this fall.
‘Walter P. Reuther (1907-1970) was a remarkable world leader for social justice and improvement of working conditions during his entire lifetime, which began just over 100 years ago,? the OTHS said in a press release. ‘While closely associated with labor and industry in Detroit, he championed equal opportunity, open housing, human rights, universal health care and environmental conservation worldwide.?
The OTHS said it is a little known fact that while Reuther worked in Detroit, he lived with his family in Oakland Township along Paint Creek from about 1950 to his untimely death in 1970.
His wife, May Wolf Reuther, was involved with Baldwin School, Oakland University and community projects while their daughters, Linda and Elisabeth, attended local schools here. Together they worked to improve Oakland Township as well.
‘No Greater Calling,? the Walter Reuther 100-year celebration of his life was created by Wayne State University Walter P. Reuther Library and will be hosted by OTHS this fall beginning in October at the Paint Creek Mill next to Paint Creek in historic Goodison, in Oakland Township.
OTHS plans to add the township story of the Reuther family to the exhibit with the help of the Reuther extended family, their former neighbors and friends and the professional staff of the Walter P. Reuther Library.
This free exhibit will be open to the public in October, November and December during fall cider season in Goodison. Watch for more details soon.
To defray the costs of the exhibit, OTHS is accepting donations directed to OTHS ? Reuther Exhibit, 384 W. Predmore Road, Oakland, MI 48363.
If you have memories, mementos, or photographs that relate to the Reuther family and wish to share them, please contact OTHS to make arrangements to copy them at your convenience.
