The Oxford varsity track team has ended the season with a bang – the girl’s team placed second in the Flint Metro League with a 4-1-1 record, while the boy’s took third with 4-2.
Placing at the league meet for the girls were: High Jump – Jenelle Parker, fourth; Long Jump – Alicia Kramer, fifth; Discus – Meghan Hickey, first; Shot Put – Meghan Hickey, first; 3200 Meter Relay – Oxford, fifth; 100 Meter Hurdles – Andrea Hitchcock, first; 100 Meter Dash – Krysten Sylva, second; 800 Meter Relay – Theresa Miner, Krysten Sylva, Darci Kujawa, Caryn Inman, first; 1600 Meter – Carly Gailey, sixth; 400 Meter Relay – Jenelle Parker, Krysten Sylva, Darci Kujawa, Theresa Miner, first; 400 Meter – Caryn Inman, second; 300 Meter Hurdles, Andrea Hitchcock, third; 800 Meter – Caryn Inman, fourth; 200 Meter – Theresa Miner, second, Darci Kujawa, fifth; 3200 Meter – Carly Gailey, fifth; and 1600 Meter Relay – Oxford took second.
Placing for the boys were: Pole Vault – Andrew Darrin, fifth; Discus – Luis Gomez, third; Shot Put – Luis Gomez, first; Vince Belitsos, third; 3200 Meter Relay – Oxford took second; 110 Meter Hurdles – Jordan Schaenzle, fourth; 100 Meter – Andrew Darrin, sixth; 800 Meter Relay – Oxford took third; 1600 Meter – Donnie Richmond, first; 400 Meter Relay – Oxford took second; 400 Meter – Pat Striet, sixth; 300 Meter Hurdles – Jordan Schaenzle, fifth; 600 Meter – Donnie Richmond, first; 200 Meter – Nick Freeborn; 3200 Meter – Donnie Richmond, first; Tim Rowland, fourth; and 1600 Meter Relay – Oxford took fifth.
Some highlights from the day include Andrea Hitchcock setting a new school record in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 16.26. Also, Oxford thrower Meghan Hickey completed her second season as undefeated in the league.
The biggest event for the day was when the girls 400 meter relay team – comprised of Parker, Sylva, Kujawa and Miner – broke the league record, which has stood for over thirty years, with a time of 51.54.
In regional action – Oxford will be sending seven individuals to state competition. Donnie Richmond qualified in both the 1600 meter and the 3200 meter runs. He was runner-up in regionals for the 1600 and took regional champion in the 3200.
Meghan Hickey will be representing Oxford in girls discus. She took regional champ with a distance of 118 feet.
The two winning girls relay teams – 800 and 400 – both qualified. The 4×200 relay – comprised of Miner, Sylva, Kujawa and Inman – set a new school record with a time of 1:47.67. The 400 relay team took regional champs with a time of 52.67.
Runner Krysten Sylva will also being competing in the 100 meter run. She took regional champion with a time of 12.96.
Honorable mentions from Oxford who did not qualify for state include the boys 3200 meter relay, which took third; and Nick Freeborn, who missed qualifying for state by .08 of a second. He took third in the 200 meter run.
