With an impressive 18-7 overall record, all the Wildcat grapplers have to do now is beat the Holly Bronchos tonight (Wednesday) to claim their second place finish in the county.
The Cats began their climb to the top of the county this past week when the team grabbed first place at the Oxford Invitational.
The biggest win of the day came when the Wildcats won 48-31 against Troy, who stood third in the county. Scoring for Oxford during that match-up were Michael Upshur, 103; Mike May, 119; Matt Duncan, 125; Ron Mantel, 130; Shawn Gall, 135; Mike Potter, 152; Kyle Rowley, 189; and Kyle Oliver, 215.
Against Grosse Point South, who was missing several weight divisions, Oxford won 75-6. Scoring in matches were Upshur, 103; Nate Musgrove, 112; Mike May, 119; Bryant Vielhaber, 125; Scott Hyder, 140; Potter, 152; Kyle Nieporte, 160; Rowley, 189; and Oliver, 215. Oxford also dominated Clio 65-16. Winning their matches were May; Mantel; Duncan; Gall; Hyder; Nick Murray, 145; Potter; Rowley; and Oliver.
The match-ups between St. Clair Shores Lakeview and Utica Stevenson were slightly closer, but the Cats still came out ahead. Scoring in the 42-31 win against St. Clair were May; Duncan; Potter; Rowley; Aaron Moore, 215; and Oliver, 275. Winning 49-21 against Utica were Upshur; Duncan; Gall; Hyder; Potter; Kyle Nieporte; Rowley; and Oliver.
Earlier in the week, the Wildcats split during a dual meet against Lapeer West and Linden. Oxford couldn’t bring down West’s 54-18 win in the first matchup, but took their revenge on on Linden 45-24.
Winning against West were Duncan, 125; Hyder, 140; and Oliver, 215. Defeating Linden were Upshur, 103; May, 119; Duncan, 125; Mantel, 130; Gall, 135; Kyle Nieporte, 152; John Logan, 160; Rowley, 189; and Oliver, 215.
