Softball sweeps DH

Layne Smedley had a double and four RBI, while Kristin Larsen added a triple and three RBI, as Lake Orion swept a doubleheader from host Troy on May 10.
Danielle Dunn was the winning pitcher in both games, which included a 6-0 shutout in game one. LO notched 13 hits in game two, en route to a 13-2 win.
The team also traveled to Royal Oak for the Pieper Tournament over the weekend.
In round robin play on May 13, LO topped Walled Lake Central, 3-2, and Royal Oak Dondero, 12-1, but fell to defending state champ Harper Woods Regina, 4-3.
The Dragons used seven hits to score three runs off of Regina’s Nicole Nemitz, widely regarded as the state’s best pitcher.
Trailing 2-0, LO scored a run in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to take a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh. However, Regina scored twice without recording an out for the comeback win.
The Dragons were awaiting the outcome of the WL Central/Regina contest to see if they would advance to the quarterfinals. That game, along with the rest of the tournament, was to be played on May 14, but play was postponed due to the weather.

The Dragons swept a doubleheader from division rival Birmingham Groves, 19-0, and 14-1, on April 25.
Danielle Dunn pitched both games, striking out six and giving up one hit in each. Both games ended early due to the mercy rule.
‘Danielle Dunn has done an excellent job,? said coach Denny Davis. ‘She has pitched every inning this year.
‘She has pitched beyond any expectations for any pitcher,? he added, noting that the left-handed Dunn was pressed into the situation because of an injury to senior Christina Collins.
At the plate, Sam Bell led the 15-hit attack in game one by going 3-for-3, with two RBI.
In game two, Kristin Larsen and Bell hit back-to-back home runs to open the Dragon scoring.
Larsen added another dinger in the second inning and Bell blasted a grand slam in the third inning.
Bell had nine RBI on the day, while Larsen went 5-for-7 and finished with five RBI.
LO also traveled to Brighton for a non-league doubleheader on May 1. Behind 14 innings on the mound from Dunn, and three RBI and a home run over the two games from Amber Argo, LO got a 5-0, 7-5 sweep.
LO is now 8-2 overall and 3-1 in the OAA I.
