So much to do in so little time?
The Independence Township Board of Trustees worked quickly through their new business at the February 7 regular meeting. The following items are some of the decisions made:
? The Independence Township Fire Department received permission to purchase 30 sets of new firefighting apparel ? including coats and pants ? from Apollo Fire Equipment Company at a cost of $48,660. This purchase was anticipated in the department’s 2006 budget.
The township received three bids for the purchase: West Shore Fire Equipment Supply ($1705 per set), Apollo Fire Equipment ($1622 per set) and Douglas Safety Equipment ($1434.55 per set). In addition to receiving the bids, the fire department did product evaluation testing, finding Apollo to be the best equipment for the money.
According to a memo from Fire Chief Steve Ronk, a majority of the department’s present turnout gear will be downgraded to secondary use, as well as replenishing the stock of spare gear kept on hand for personnel who experience damage to their primary set.
? Board members approved the purchase of a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado pickup from Simms Chevrolet Motors, Inc. of Ortonville at a cost of $25,100 for the Parks and Recreation Department.
The township also received a bid for a GMC Sierra from Red Holman Pontiac/GMC for $25,211. Both vehicles include a snow plow; extended 5 year/ 50,000 mile, zero deductible warranty and fees for the titles.
The new vehicle will replace the Park and Recreation Department’s 1998 GMC truck, which has over 70,000 miles.
? Kimberly Duberg was reclassified to the position of Accounts Payable at the Independence Township Library.
The Independence Township Board of Trustees meets on the first and third Tuesdays of the month at 7:30 p.m. in the Independence Township Library.
