Wolves earn dual splits on respective diamonds

Getting in one more contest before the spring break led to the same results for Clarkston’s baseball and softball squads: a doubleheader split.
On April 2, the boys took a 20-5 win in the first game of a twin bill with Waterford Mott, before dropping the second game 8-3.
In the game-one win, the boys scored their 20 runs off 10 hits, including a home run hit by Joel Lange and two-RBI games from Lange and Richie Woods.
Clarkston (1-2) read a different story in the second game. Lange, the hero in the first set, was tagged for nine Corsairs? hits in the second.
‘Our kids didn’t come out to play the second game. They came out flat and made too many mistakes,? Clarkston baseball coach Phil Price said.
‘That’s part of our inexperience. (Experience) is going to come as we play more games.?
The Wolves? defense needs to get stronger to support Clarkston pitchers, Price said.
‘Our pitchers are trying to compensate for our fielders. (Pitchers) aren’t throwing strikes, but (fielders) aren’t fielding the ball behind them. But it’s only the third game of the season.?
On the girls? diamond April 3, the Wolves won game one of their doubleheader versus Utica Stevenson 8-3 and lost the second contest 13-3 to open the season.
Taylor Hasselbach batted 4/7, knocking in four RBI’s, and hitting a homerun and a triple in the win. Megan Moehlig held Stevenson to two runs for the Wolves.
‘She kept the ball down and forced them to hit the ball on the ground,? Clarkston coach Don Peters said. ‘The first game was great, the second game, we just didn’t play well. We tried to overcompensate. The first game, they played great defense, and they turned a true double play. That’s pretty tough to do in high school.
‘I don’t like losing, but I look at the first 10 games for feedback for what needs improvement. You need to get some games in to see what you’re all about,? Peters said.
Monique Guerrero hit two doubles on the day and Peters expects many more.
‘She’s turning into a nice line-drive hitter for us. She’s a really focused hitter up there for us.?
