Wolves shut out Cougars 7-0 in OAA Red opener

BLOOMFIELD HILLS — The Wolves opened the OAA Red with a 7-0 shutout against Stoney Creek, Nov. 21.
Clarkston Varsity Hockey Head Coach Nathan Bryer rolled four forward lines all night and it was a very up tempo game with several breakaways and a scoring barrage by a total of five different Wolves.
Newcomer Drew Seiting accounted for two goals and an assist, as did Frank Stanek, who also drove home two goals and an assist.
Seiting shared after the game why he made the jump for travel club hockey for the USA Eagles to the high school squad.
“It’s much more competitive,” he said. “The team’s like a family, the players and the other teams are better. I have great line mates. I just love them.”

“Our coaches have really stressed our team identity, to play hard a full fifty-one minutes,” added Stanek, a four-year player. “We had a few ups and downs tonight, but we got after it.”
It took less than three minutes for the Wolves to get on the board, when Gavin Anderson jumped on a rebound from the shot by Kyle Lynch passed from Eric Wade past Cougar goaltender Owen Smith.
Clarkston continued the puck barrage, pouring a total of 50 shots on Smith to just 15 saves made by Brady Damian in the Wolves’ net.
Seiting added his first power play goal at 3:44 remaining on a rebound off the shot by Trey Damian, to boost the two goal lead, taking it into the locker room.
The Wolves came out in the second stanza and quickly set the tone, when senior defenseman, Stanek drilled home a power play shot on passing assists by Trey Damian and Seiting nearly midway through the second period, to boost the Wolves to a three goal lead.
With just 40 seconds left on the clock, Seiting tallied his second goal, from Johnny Walker and Vinny Giannini, taking the Wolves to a four goal lead at the intermission.
With 10:10 left in the third period, Cal Kennedy drew a slashing penalty and it took just nine seconds when Giannini attempted to clear the defending zone, bouncing the puck off a Cougar defender. Stanek jumped on the deflection and skated in on a breakaway to beat Smith, upping the lead to five goals.
With 7:22 remaining, T. Damian buried his third point of the night, on a pinpoint pass, in the high slot area, off of precision passes from brothers George and Luke Walker. Less than four minutes later, G. Walker closed out the Wolves scoring from Stanek and L.Walker.
The Wolves have been on the road the last few weeks with a 4-3 overtime loss to Flint Powers Catholic, Nov. 23. Stanek, Anderson and Ryan Wilford each had one goal. Lynch had two assists. B. Damian had 30 saves in the net while the Wolves made 39 shots on Flint Powers’s goalie Hunter Clark.
Clarkston lost to Forest Hills Central last Friday in overtime during the Brighton Showcase, 4-3. G. Walker scored with 13:37 left in the second period on a power play.
Just over three minutes later, Lynch tied the score with Forest Hills Central, 2-2, with his first goal of the night with assists from Anderson and T. Damian. His second goal in the third period tied the game, 3-3, with an assist from T. Damian.
Benny Mielock scored during the shoot out for Forest Hills Central to win the game.
Calum Hartner and B. Damian each made eight saves during the game. The Wolves made 30 shots on Forest Hills Central.
The Wolves played Brighton on Saturday during the showcase and lost in overtime, 3-2.
Clarkston hosts Birmingham United this Thursday at 6 p.m. and Byron Center on Saturday at 4 p.m. Both games are at Detroit Skating Club in Bloomfield Hills. –Jack Leech/Wendi Price
