Yoga event to take stand against cancer

Lindsay Green, co-owner of Mueva Fitness, 6465 Dixie Highway, invites the community to Stand Up To Cancer, 10 a.m.- 12 p.m., Saturday, June 8, at First Congregational Church, 5449 Clarkston Road.
“The church has graciously offered to support us,” Green said. “It’s a beautiful area behind Pine Knob with plenty of parking.”
The event will include a one-hour, outdoor Vinyasa Yoga practice for all levels, live entertainment, and silent auction of items donated by local businesses.
“It’s a way to get people to move their bodies, and raise awareness and funds for research,” she said.
The national fund-raising effort supports team reseach by scientists in several different fields.
“This is our first year with Stand Up To Cancer,” she said. “It’s the first event of its kind in Clarkston ? we’re really excited.”
Green has a personal connection to the fight against cancer ? her fiance, Josh Vanicelli, died of the disease five years ago.
“He was much too young,” she said. “He was part of clinical trial out west, but it wasn’t successful for him.”
With a goal of raising $5,000, they have raised $4,000 so far and hope to reach more than $6,000 in donations. More than 70 people, teenagers into their 70s, have registered so far.
“We’re hoping for 100 people,” Green said. “If you can stand up you should come out to honor your state of health, to support someone in your family who has been battling cancer, and raise money so we can all have more birthdays.”
