Injuries don’t sideline team

Injuries kept five girls from playing against Farmington High School.
But that didn’t bring the rest of the Clarkston’s girls varsity soccer team from scoring two goals and staying in the game, finishing with a tie.
‘I think they knew their backs were against the wall a little bit with us having so many players down and they weren’t going to be mentally defeated and they didn’t,? said Clarkston Coach Sarah Wasilk.
‘I couldn’t be more happier or proud of my girls. They played an awesome game. They played their hearts out. They really showed their character. I couldn’t be happier.?
For both teams, it was an intense game. One player left the field with an injury. A few more received yellow cards. One Clarkston player received a red card and was taken out of the game for 36 minutes.
‘Both teams were playing tough as nails and nobody was going to give up,? said Wasilk. ‘I don’t know what would have happened if there would have been ten or 15 more minutes cause both teams were just really intense and really tough. I am happy with them.?
‘I thought it was the most intense games of the year for us, without a doubt,? said Farmington Coach Glenn Breuhan. ‘We had a lot of pressure near the end. We have been working on intensity.?
A free kick from Lauren Wagner got the Wolves in a closer position to the net. Kaylee Liddle kicked the ball into the corner of the goal and scored the first goal for the Wolves.
Allie Browe made the second goal four minutes into the second period. Browe was assisted by Alex Decker.
The Falcons scored their goals in the last 30 minutes of the game. The goals were made by Andrea Grove and Chrissy Healy.
‘My whole team did so well,? said Wasilk. ‘All girls did their job and did it well even the girls coming off the bench .?
Dani Thomas and Lauren Wagner stood out for the game.
‘We pulled freshman from JV yesterday.? (Liddle) got her first goal She played the whole first half and defensively Breanne Timm had a great game.?
Beth Parks saved three shots on goal. Clarkston made a total of four shots on Farmington’s goal.
‘We felt like we had a lot of shots in the first half and just came up empty,? said Breuhan. ‘That’s been the story of the season, we have out shot our opponents 2-1 and came out with ties, 0-0. This is big for us. This is huge – we scored two goals. We kind of got the monkey off our back.?
Last week they lost to Avondale, 2-1, and Grand Blanc, 6-0.
On Monday, they lost to Groves, 1-0.
The girls play at Seaholm High School on Thursday and at Avondale next Tuesday. JV begins at 5 p.m., varsity follows.
