Oxford’s varsity softball may still have a shot at the Flint Metro League if the team pulls together their great defensive skills with some improved offensive. Currently, the ladies stand 1-3 in the league.
On May 6, the Lady Cats showed their defensive sklls by staying in the game against league leader Lapeer West, but the team succumbed to the Panthers strength with a 0-5 loss in game one and 1-4 in game two. Amber Cervantez was the losing pitcher for both match ups.
In game one, Oxford demonstrated their defensive skills with only one error the entire game. But a weak showing at the plate, with only one hit each form Jessica Anhel and Ali Belmonte, pulled the team down.
Game two saw an improvement offensively with more of the great defense that keeps the Cats in play. Anne Marie Skylis led offensively, going three for four, hitting the RBI that drove in Megan Stumph for Oxford’s one run. Also hitting one each were Shannon Gerbe, Amanda Crump, Megan Bono, Jenni Rhodes and Kristi Curtis.
‘This was a sad performance versus a top ranked team,? said Coach Sue Roeher. ‘We can still win the FML with help. The girls are now starting to put it all together – combining their defense and offense for the entire 14 innings.?
The match-up with Lapeer East on May 10 was rained out and results from the Flint Kearsley tournament will be available in the next edition of the Leader.
