The Oxford varsity baseball team scored well on the diamond this past week.
On May 8, the Wildcats won both match-ups against Lapeer East. In game one, winning pitcher Sean Maher took the team through seven innings for an 8-2 win. He allowed only four hits and had eight strike outs.
Ryan Stull added a triple and two RBIs to the board, and the team kicked into gear in the sixth inning with five runs.
In game two, Ryan Stull took the pitcher’s mound for a 6-5 win over East. He had five hits and six strike outs over seven innings.
In the bottom of the fifth, Oxford was trailing 5-0, but the team regrouped and came back for five runs. David Reile, Andy Bukoski, Joel Grifka and Brett Brammer each had two hits while teammate David Fischer had two RBIs. Grifka had the game winning RBI at the bottom of the sixth.
On May 10, Oxford shut out Stoney Creek 12-1 in game one and 12-2 in game two.
Winning pitcher Bryan Mattack had five strike outs and three hits before the umps called a mercy rulling and ended the game after the fifth inning. Bryan McCambell wen t three for three while teammates Steven Florres, Reile and Adam Terry each had two hits.
Game two saw pitcher Stull enjoying the similar success with four strike outs and only four hits over six innings. He also went two for three at bat. Teammate Florres added his own hit with a two run triple.
The Wildcat’s latest contest saw them ending with a split against Linden.
‘We made some basic mistakes,? said head coach Kurt Nuss. ‘We also made some bad base running mistakes.?
In game one, Oxford lost to Linden 2-3. Losing pitcher Stull allowed five hits in six innings. Nuss said defense was also lacking with four errors.
However, the Wildcats came back in game two to redeem themselves with a 13-4 win.
‘We were better than them,? said Nuss. ‘They guys were just not playing in the first game.?
Stull had two hits and three RBIs, while Bukoski had two doubles and four RBIs. Bukoski was also the winning pitcher with only three hits over seven innings.
Oxford plays next against Fenton.
