Golf season for the lady Dragons is in full swing. The young team, made up of freshman Rose Griffin, sophomores Stacey Lecnzar, Maddy McClean and Rielly Dunn, and senior Alyssa Mason, played two tournaments this year.
The girls placed fifth of six teams in the Oakland Activities Association (OAA) Red tournament and 17th of 22 in Birmingham Seaholm’s invitational.
‘We did fairly well for being so new,? said Coach Megan Daly. ‘This is another developing year.?
Daly said the team plans to work on exercising their skills, especially in the short game. Three teammembers are working with a golf professional from Oakhurst, and have ‘made strides,? according to their coach.
‘We definitely want to improve as the season goes on.?
Daly says her goal as a coach is to create lifelong golf players.
‘It’s such a great game. I want them to play for the rest of their lives and to enjoy it,? she said.
In her last year at Lake Orion High School, Mason is serving as the team’s captain.
‘She’s a varsity athlete who brings experience and wisdom,? said the coach. ‘She has a calming influence.?
McClean is the team’s raw talent, said Daly, and Lecnzar and Dunn ‘show great promise.?
Griffin is new to golf and is taking everything in, said her coach.
On Monday, lady Dragons will face state-contender Stoney Creek. Daly says the girls were a little intimidated to face the team, as well as fellow state-contender Rochester. But, after playing in two tournaments already, they now know the level of caliber needed to be competitive.
‘Everyone needs to play their own game,? Daly said.
