Luby’s Boobies to blaze trails with Pink Ribbon

Not everybody can do the national three-day walk for breast cancer, says Diane Schlitt.
Schlitt is a member of Luby’s Boobies, a three-day walk team that walks in honor of Kathy Luby, a former Lake Orion teacher who passed away from breast cancer in 2008 at age 40.
Now, Schlitt and fellow teammates Patty Jarvis and Carl St. Henry are joining up with Pink Ribbon Trailblazers (PRT).
PRT was founded by Lake Orion resident Pat Nolf. It’s a one-day walk/run event that raises money for women without insurance and provides them with mammograms (and ultrasounds if necessary) in St. Joseph Mercy Health System.
This year’s walk is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 11 on the Polly Ann Trail in Oxford.
‘Not everybody can do the three-day walk, which entails a lot of fundraising and walking,? said Schlitt. ‘This is a one-day event we can involve our children in. Kathy Luby always wanted to do so much, and that’s where we want to help.?
‘This is an opportunity for anybody, young or old, to be able to participate,? said Patty Jarvis, Lake Orion resident and therapist at St. Joe’s.
All proceeds from the event stay in Oakland County, said Nolf.
‘We’re grassroots.?
Last year, PRT gave $18,000, which is enough to cover mammograms for over 160 women.
There’s no registration fee to participate in PRT’s walk. Participants can donate any amount; $108 covers the cost of one mammogram and a T-shirt for the event.
Nolf says she makes up the difference for anyone who can’t donate $108.
