15 years ago – 2002
“Top of the food chain” Niko LeVigne eats tasty ribs during Taste of Clarkston as many came out to the annual event for delicious food, shopping and playing games.
“Clarkston resident makes it as Navy Seal” Kevin Pope, a 2001 Clarkston High School graduate, graduated from Navy SEAL training and at the top of his class. He was one of only 15 to complete training which started out with 187 men.
“Bones discovered at East Washington” Construction workers on East Washington unearthed more than they expected while digging a trench – they discovered bones from a cow. Researchers from Cranbrook Institute of Science estimated they were from the 19th or 20th century.
25 years ago – 1992
“Reading not easy for everyone” Illiteracy is everywhere and Independence Township resident Bill Engel shared his story about learning he could only read at a second-grade level when he was 43-years-old and over the span of five years of tutoring he could read at a fifth-grade level.
“AA wins special approval for community center” Independence Township Planning Commission approved the special land use for an empty church on Pine Knob Road to be used by the Alano Organization as a community center for Alcoholics Anonymous, Alanon, and Alateen.
“Pom pon squad ‘best all-around’” The Clarkston High School Pom Pon squad earned best all-around squad at National Cheerleader Association Camp where they also had best home routine, won the spirit award and won a blue ribbon. They also won a trophy in their competition at Oakland Community College.
50 years ago – 1967
“Fernando Sanchez appointed to Clarkston Education Board” Clarkston Board of Education President R.A. Weber appointed Fernando Sanchez to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Melvin Pohlkotte.
“Around the town” Mr. and Mrs. Jay Campbell (nee Sandra Crosby) became proud parents of Gordon Matthew, born Sept. 25 weighing four pounds and 14 ounces.
“Wolves win again” The Clarkston Varsity Football team won their third consecutive game with a 21-7 win over Clarenceville.
