15 years ago – 2004
“Campfire Circle issue hits road block” An Independence Township board recommendation on the proposed closing of Campfire Circle was put on hold after it was brought to the board’s attention it might be a private road.
“Cancer survivor gears up for Relay” While the Clarkston Relay for Life was a 24-hour event, it was a year-round project Springfield Township resident Sharon Worden. It was the fifth time the cancer survivor participated in the event, which raises money for the American Cancer Society.
“Softball captures fourth district in a row” The Clarkston Varsity Softball team shut down Pontiac Northern, Pontiac Central and Waterford Kettering to capture their fourth consecutive district title.
25 years ago – 1994
“No more teachers – just work” Jason Keener and Renee Shubert were just a few of 336,000 Michigan residents, ages 16 through 19, who were employed during the summer. Keener was working with Clarkston’s Department of Public Works and Shubert was working as a lifeguard at Deer Lake Athletic Club.
“Officer has a soft spot for animals” Clarkston Police Officer Scott Crissey kept a look out for water birds from the Mill Pond crossing the road. He even stopped on White Lake Road near Deer Lake Beach when a couple of turtles had stopped in the middle of the road. He moved them off the road.
“Seeing Michigan by the back roads” John Meyland, an avid bicyclist, was getting ready to ride in the Detroit Free Press Michigan bicycle tour in July for the second year in a row.
50 years ago – 1969
“Teacher retires after 26 years” Isabella Crowley spent 26 years teaching kindergarten and second grade and she retired to conquer new fields. She planned to enjoy time with her seven grandchildren, to travel and to spend time relaxing.
“UofM awards varsity ‘M’” Moby Benedict, University of Michigan Baseball Coach, announced the 1969 baseball Varsity “M” awards. Clarkston High School grad Dan Fife was among the 17 letter winners.
“Around the town” About 100 friends helped Norma and Bill O’Roark celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. The Clarkston High School sweethearts married in Arkansas, where Bill was stationed.
