County matching grant for roads

The Oakland County Board of Commissioners voted on June 12 to adopt a resolution securing $2,792 to help fix Clarkston roads.
“It is great to have the opportunity to collaborate with the City of the Village of Clarkston to help with funding local road repairs,” said Commissioner Thomas F. Middleton, who sponsored the resolution.
“The Village of Clarkston is extremely grateful for the recent allocation of funds,” said City Manager Jonathan Smith. “These funds will augment city funds to rebuild portions of Miller and Waldon roads this year.”
The county’s Local Road Improvement Program, which provided the funds, helps Oakland County cities and villages with road repairs and improvements. The program requires local municipalities to match funding from the county.
“Oakland County is stepping up, partnering with local cities and villages to help fix and maintain our local roads,” said Chairman David T. Woodward. “We started this local road funding program to be part of the solution, it’s now time the Michigan legislature do their job and fix the damn roads.”
The estimated $70 million program was launched in 2016. In 2017, the Board of Commissioners’ LRIP received national recognition when it was selected for a National Association of Counties (NACo) Achievement Award in the category of Community and Economic Development.
This year, Clarkston applied for two matching grants with the Michigan Economic Development Transportation Fund. Both were denied. City road work priorities include Miller Road from Main Street to Glenburnie, the Waldon Road approach to Main Street and the Clarkston Road approach to Main Street.
Commissioner Middleton represents the Fourth District, which includes the City of the Village of Clarkston, as well as portions of Independence and Waterford townships. He can be reached at 248-620-6551 or middletont@oakgov.com.
