In a split vote, Clarkston City Council tabled a proposal for more electronic speed limit signs in town.
The proposal, recommended by the Planning Commission at Monday’s meeting, was for two 13-inch “your speed is” signs on M-15 for $8,490, pending state approval, and two 11-inch signs on Miller Road for $7,621, for a total of $16,111. Money would come from the city parking fund.
Voting “yes” to table were Mayor Eric Haven and council members Sharron Catallo, Scott Reynolds, and Sue Wylie. Council members Al Avery, Jason Kneisc, and David Marsh voted not to table.
Marsh said they needed more information from existing electronic signs on Holcomb Road.
“I love the idea of safety, but I don’t like the idea of flashing lights in the downtown historic district,” he said.
Avery wasn’t sure of the need for the signs on Miller.
“To me, it seems like an awful lot of money for a short stretch of road,” he said.
Two signs were installed on Holcomb Road earlier this year. City Council discussed additional speed-control signs on Main Street and Miller Road in September.
