The North Oakland Headwaters Land Conservancy received a $50,000 grant from Consumers Energy Foundation supporting the “Big Help for a Little Butterfly” campaign to purchase and protect habitat for the endangered Poweshiek Skipperling butterfly.
“We are pleased to take steps to preserve habitat for one of Michigan’s most endangered species today and for the future survival of the butterfly here in our state,” said Brandon Hofmeister, president of the Consumers Energy Foundation.
The grant will support the purchase, restoration, and maintenance of 21.5 acres of prairie fen and oak barren, and an adjacent 16 acres of fen wetland.
“We have an opportunity here not only to save a critically endangered butterfly, but also to protect rare habitat that is diminishing throughout the state of Michigan,” said Sue Julian, Executive Director at NOHLC. “This fen and upland complex in Davisburg can be saved forever, benefiting people as well as nature. Thanks to the Consumers Energy Foundation for leading the way and encouraging other public donations in this $275,000 campaign.”
NOHLC’s Annual Meeting for the public is on Saturday, Feb. 22, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the social hall of the Church of the Resurrection on Clarkston Road. Featured guest speaker will be Bill Schneider of Wildtype Nursery.
