Clarkston is certainly known for its traditional sports programs, but Katelin Fields is making waves in town for her skills in archery.
A freshman at Clarkston Junior High School, Fields placed tenth in the Recurve-Youth Female division at The Vegas Shoot 2020, a competition held Feb. 7-9 in Las Vegas that attracted archers from all over the world.
“I went to Vegas for a week, and it was a family vacation so I wasn’t shooting for a week,” said Fields. “I shot with a girl from Sweden, and she spoke Swedish and English. She was pretty good, actually.”
When asked how she first came to find the appeal of archery, Fields laughed.
“Well, I think it was watching one of those Disney movies, the ‘Brave’ movie,” she said. “When I was little, I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, I want to do that.’ My mom was looking in the newspaper, and she found a signup for Oakland County Sportsmen’s Club. They do an archery program there, so I did that. I’ve been doing it ever since.”
Carey Moscowitz is Fields’ coach and his son, Coby, shoots for Texas A&M University, a school Fields has eyes on attending down the road.
“I really do want to continue with archery,” Fields said. “Texas A&M has really good architecture program there, so that’s what I want to do.”
For those looking to get into archery, Fields said “not a lot of people notice it, but archery is everywhere.”
“It’s really fun, and it’s not one of those sports where you have to be really good at cardio or anything like that,” Fields said. “You do have to definitely be strong enough, but it’s really fun and it makes me really happy. Archery is a huge mental game. Your mental game affects how you shoot even, so just try to keep positive. Just keep going.”
Later this month, Fields will shoot in a tournament in Louisville and also has the South Dakota tournament later this year circled on her calendar.
