25 years ago – 1995
“Packing the perfect spacesuit” Clarkston High School graduate Tricia Mack always wanted to be an astronaut, but her eyesight wouldn’t allow it to happen. She shared she was doing the next best thing – training astronauts for extra-vehicular activities at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas.
“$1.8 M approved for new fire hall” The Independence Township Board of Trustees accepted a construction bid for a new $1.8 million fire/Oakland County Sheriff’s Department station. During the meeting, eight bids were rejected for a new $500,000 Bay Court Beach House because bidders did not meet specifications or costs were too high.
“32 teams drawn to one man’s tourney” The sixth annual Chambo’s Wiffleball Tournament moved from Gene Chamberlain’s backyard on Foster Road to Holcomb Park after the tournament grew to 32 teams competing.

50 years ago – 1970
“’Night of Champions’ benefits roller skaters” Six residents of Independence Township were part of an 11-member roller skating team which would represent Pontiac Rolladium Skating Club at the 1970 North American Skating Championship.
“Township numbers” Census figures to date were tentative but first report showed Independence Township with 17,301 residents, which included 1,500 Clarkston Village residents. The figures were given to Supervisor Duane Hursfall on his request.
“Around town” Mr. and Mrs. Robert Kloc of Waldon Road traveled to Cedar Point and Niagara Falls. They had a car full with children, Mark, Robin and Danny, grandmother Mrs. Eleanor Young, and neighbor Jeff Breckenridge.

75 years ago – 1945
“Livestock Club gets ready for fair” The Clarkston Livestock Club met at the home of Shirley Burns to discuss preparations for the County Fair, which was set for August 16 and 17.
“Clarkston locals” The Stewarts sold their home on Miller Road to Mr. and Mrs. Kermit Jones of Flint. Mr. and Mrs. Stewart intended to live at Maceday Lake for a while before purchasing another home. Kermit Jones was the son of Mrs. Bertha Jones of Miller Road.
“Our boys and girls in service” Lt. (JG) Arthur Clark spent a few days with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lee M. Clark, before leaving for San Diego, Calif.
