On December 9, 2019, the City of the Village of Clarkston City Council adopted a resolution “to establish a local Historic District Study Committee to update the existing Historic District inventory to reflect the current resources.”
The Clarkston Historic District Study Committee will be conducting a photographic inventory as well as research all on structures within the historic district boundaries.
The Study Committee will be following procedures established by the State Historic Preservation Office. The state requests updates periodically to strengthen the records.
The study encompasses all resources constructed from the date of the oldest structures to structures constructed through 2019.
The Clarkston Village Historic District has already been classified as a location of significance in American History.
The Clarkston Village Historic District was designated a Michigan State Historic District on January 16, 1976 and added to the National Registry on May 15, 1980.
Clarkston was classified as “an architecturally significant 19th century mill village displaying an exceptional range of architectural styles.”
Representatives of the Historic District Study Committee will be contacting the owners of property within the boundaries. If the owner has any old photographs or details about previous owners, we are interested in learning of these.
In addition, we will be noting changes to the property. We need a current photo of each structure so someone will be taking photographs of all structures within the Historic District boundaries.
The email address for the Historic District Study Committee is studycomm@villageofclarkston.org.
Property owners can send messages to the committee via the email address or leave a message at City Hall (248-625-5111) with Jennifer Speagle.
