The volleyball match-up of the season is ready to take place tonight (Thursday) at 7 p.m. between undefeated league teams Oxford and Lapeer East.
“It is going to be a show down,” said Head Coach Kristy McDevitt. “We are both undefeated in the league at 5-0 and would love to have a big crowd in the fieldhouse to cheer on the girls.”
The Oxford ladies latest league competition was on Jan. 22 against Lapeer West. The Panthers had little hope of success with the Lady Cats dominating the court 15-5 and 15-7. Leading the team were Kristi Curtis with six points and three aces, and Darci Kujawa with seven points, two aces and going 8-8 in passing. Leading at the net was Lindsey Tarrant with five kills.
In a make-up match on Jan. 15, Oxford defeated Linden 15-5 and 15-1. Leading offensively was Jessica Anhel with eight points and two aces. Tarrant again made her presence known with six kills and 12-12 in passing. Heading up the defense was Vanessa Collier with four blocks.
To round out the week, the Lady Cats attended the Lake Orion Tournament where they finished 6-1-1 and took second place, following to Romeo in the championship.
Oxford had defeated Romeo during pool play, but couldn’t keep the momentum going during the championship round. McDevitt said the team “came out flat… and couldn’t get things together.” She added that overall a lot of balls were breaking through the Cats defense, while at the same time the ladies were struggling to get hits through Romeo’s.
“Overall, Romeo just played better volleyball than us,” she said. “There is not doubt in my mind we were the best team there, we just didn’t finish the day strong.”
Brandi Parker played hard all day with 76 assists, 33 kills, 49 points and 10 aces. Tarrant added her support with 55 kills, the most for the day. Juniors Collier, who had 13 kills, and Anhel, who contributed 10 points and 4 aces, also played strong games.
The Lady Wildcats now stand 20-4-4 overall and 5-0 in the Flint Metro League as they take on the Eagles tonight. Make sure to come out and support the girls! Go Wildcats!
