Wolves ran and jumped into the spring season as they competed in the SVSU D1 Indoor Invitational at Saginaw Valley State University last Wednesday.
“We did very well,” said Kevin Breen, head coach for Clarkston Boys and Girls Track and Field teams. “We had some break through races with the group. We had some personal bests which is fun for the first meet to see that kind of stuff happen. We saw some other kids hit marks they were hitting at at the end of the season.”
He added only a handful of athletes from both teams went to the meet as they were ready to compete.
“Just good starting off the bat knowing you have a core part of your team who is already ready to compete,” Breen said. “They have put the time in order to have themselves prepared. I always feel like the spring season is short. You get started, you hit spring break, then you have 7-8 weeks left in the season after that. Then, it’s just tough to develop anyone especially when you have a sport which is primarily based on conditioning.”
For the boys team, in the 60-meter dash, senior Glenn Wood finished in 18th place in the time of 7.43; sophomore Keehan LaVell, 29th place, 7.64; 200-meter run, LaVell, 29th place, 24.73; Wood, 36th place, 24.86; 400-meter run, junior Mark Palmeter, fifth place, 52.03; sophomore Brock Trevino, 18th place, 55.38; 800-meter run, senior Joey Taverna, eighth place, 2:03.02; sophomore Andrew Floros, 22nd place, 2:13.69; 1,600-meter run, sophomore Bryce Nowik, ninth place, 4:39.28; senior Hunter Bogar, 21st place, 4:54.14; and 60-meter hurdles, senior Robert Spencer, tenth place, 9.83.
The relay team of Palmeter, Spencer, LaVell and Trevino finished in seventh place in the time of 2:36.62 in the 1,200-meter relay.
For the girls team for track events, in the 60-meter dash, junior Jurney Harris finished in 12th place in the time of 8.36; junior Katrina Massey, 32nd place, 8.77; 200-meter run, senior Madie Carpentier, 45th place, 31.65; 400-meter run, junior Annelise Lemieux, 13th place, 1:04.97; 800-meter run, junior Rebekah Wilson, 12th place, 2:38.70; 1,600-meter run, sophomore Alexandra Brigham, third, 5:19.63; and 60-meter hurdles, Carpentier, 20th place, 11.75.
The team of Lemieux, sophomore Emily Valencia, senior Crysta Gasiorowski and freshman Carsey Collins finished in tenth place in the time of 3:09.22 in the 1,200-meter relay.
The team of Brigham, Wilson, Valencia and Gasiorowski finished in ninth place in the time of 7:26.80 in the 2,400-meter relay.
For field events, in the high jump, Collins finished in 14th place with height of 4-05; Carpentier, 26th place, 4-02; long jump, Massey, 14th place, with distance of 14-03.75; Collins, 20th place, 13-06.5; and junior Emma Larkins, 31st place, 12-06.5.
Breen said both teams look good this season and a lot of student-athletes came out for this season.
“The best thing about this year is out of our 130-140 kids out for track and field this season, they have been phenomenal to work with,” he added. “They are doing everything they need to at practices. They already know their routines. They are starting to understand the basics of our form work we do at the beginning of practice. We have a good number of hardworking individuals out for track this season. It’s good to see. You can take someone who is willing to listen and willing to work hard and you can make them into something. There’s some hardworking individuals and I can’t wait to see what they can do this season.”
The Wolves return from spring break hosting an OAA Red meet against Rochester Adams on Wednesday, April 6.
“They have a strong sprints program,” said Breen. “They have someone who runs under 50 seconds for the quarter mile nearly unbeatable. They have that kind of person on their team. They have a good distance runner. They always have great hurdlers. They will be a tough team to beat just because of those three to four athletes they can score so many points.”
