15 years ago – 2004
“Board tables Whoopee Bowl demolition order” Owners of the Whoopee Bowl made enough progress in their cleanup efforts that Springfield Township officials held off on demolishing it. They voted to table the awarding of the bid to raze the Dixie Highway business.
“Clarkston residents ask schools to pave road” Cliff and Delores Smart presented a petition with 13 signatures to the Clarkston Community Schools Board of Education to repave E. Church Street, a private road. Board president Karen Foyteck said state law prohibited use of bond dollars for such paving unless deemed “vital for student safety.”
“Library book kits keep Clarkston in tune with reading” For the second year in a row, the Independence Township Library was offering free book group kits to area reading groups in hopes of sparking interest in different book titles and creating discussion.
25 years ago – 1994
“Out of the fry pan, into the fire” Mike Krystyniak started his new position as Sashabaw Middle School assistant principal after working at Oakland Technical Center where he was a chef and culinary arts instructor for five years.
“PTA Council puts the children first” The one-year-old Clarkston PTA Council had some lofty goals for the coming year, all of which centered on making the school experience the best it could be for local children.
“One last fling” There was a big turnout for Family Night at Deer Lake Beach. The event, sponsored by Independence Township Parks and Recreation, featured games for the kids, lots of food, and a chance to dig in the sand one more time.
50 years ago – 1969
“Village may stop motors on Mill Pond” The Clarkston Village Council indicated they would like to see all motor driven boats eliminated from the Mill Pond. Councilman Jack Hagen said some people who didn’t live on the Pond had put boats with motors in the water and had caused some disturbance.
“Wranglers win 4-H Fair honors” The Clarkston Wranglers, a 4-H club, won the Grand Championship, three reserve championships and tons of riboons during the Oakland County 4-H Fair.
“Around town” Jean Goins was given a baby shower by Mrs. Don Hughes, Mrs. Joe Green and Mrs. William Goins at the Hughson home on Heath Street.
