25 years ago – 1997
“Ice. Not nice.” Clarkston had a familiar wake up call Friday – the sound of residents scraping their cars after an ice storm hit much of the area during the night. The effect – as usual during Michigan in March or April – was a combination of lacy, filigreed beauty and travel treachery.
“Writing can be fun, author says” Children’s author Steven Kroll visited several Clarkston elementary schools as part of March is Reading Month and regaled students with his stories of the good and the bad of being a writer. On the whole, the pluses outweighed the minuses.
“Wolfpack AAU cagers take firsts” For the second weekend in a row, the Clarkston Wolfpack AAU Girls Basketball team brought home hardware thanks to a 5-0 record at the Orion Viper Invitational tournament.
50 years ago – 1972
“Erin go bragh” There’s nothing like green beer for quenching an Irishman’s thirst on St. Paddy’s Day and Paul Rice, proprietor of The Clarkston Cafe, said “’Twill will be a great day for the Irish” at the cafe for the holiday on Friday.
“Winning girls’ team takes on alumni” Clarkston High School Girls Basketball team were Wayne-Oakland League champs, earning a 5-0 league record and hold a 7-3 season record. They planned to put their ability to the test in a team alumni contest.
“Around the township” Mark Hoxsie was home visiting his parents and old friends during his spring break. He was a member of the dorm council at Central Michigan University where he was majoring in Elementary Education.
75 years ago – 1947
“Local resident honored on birthday” A group of friends gathered at the home of Mrs. William Allen and honored her at a surprise birthday party. There were 23 present and they enjoyed playing games and giving beautiful gifts to the honoree.
“The Hilltopper” Mrs. Monzelle Clark reported rehearsals for the junior’s play “Snafu” were going well and indicated the community wouldn’t want to miss the performance of the comedy at Clarkston auditorium in April. She added this was one of the best casts she has worked with in all her play directing.
“Clarkston locals” Mr. and Mrs. Guy A. Walter returned to their home on North Main Street after spending a few weeks in Florida.
